The United States has a love affair
with the horse. It’s an old relationship that’s been around for
thousands of years, long before the US was officially a nation.
In fact, equus evolved in North America and was integral to the
survival of early humans. Of course, the animals disappeared
from the continent some 10,000 years ago and did not return
until Spanish explorers brought them back. Afterwards, the
horse played a major role in the building of a new nation.
Perhaps that’s why Americans love horses.
On the other hand, maybe we love horses
because they’re beautiful, powerful, and just plain fun! Riding
a horse is a wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors. Even
urbanites revel in the chance to climb aboard the sturdy back
of an equine and spend some time surrounded by nature. This is
made evident by the huge popularity of riding stables across
the country, including some in and near metropolitan
areas.
Many riders and would-be riders take it
a step further and plan their entire vacations around horses.
For some, this provides a great chance to “get back to
nature.” Others just might want to play cowboy for a few
days. Even experienced riders often spend a week or so at a
riding clinic in order to improve their skills in a specific
discipline.
Whatever the reason, a horseback riding
vacation might just be the right antidote to the stress and
pressures of the modern world. Imagine traveling remote trails,
far removed from pollution and the sound of traffic, or being
part of a cattle drive, or packing into some backcountry
destination and sleeping under the stars…it just doesn’t get
any better than this!

A riding vacation is fun for the whole
family, and it provides the opportunity for spending quality
time with your loved ones. Even if you’ve never spent a single
second in the saddle, your hosts will make you feel at ease.
Most are experts at matching you with the right horse to ensure
your safety and enjoyment. And if you live in the US, chances
are that you’re not far from a horseback riding vacation
destination.
